Breakups: Conscious Uncouplings
Annoyingly perfect even when she’s not really, Gwyneth Paltrow produced eyes roll when she uncovered programs to “consciously uncouple” from her spouse. Coldplav frontman Chris Martin. But what was at first dismissed as a euphemism for a failed celebrity marriage turned out to be something even more. Martin reportedly bought a house across the street from his ex in order to be closer to their two Hello there children. And though it hasn’t always been easy–Paltrow flipped out when Martin started dating 24-year-old actress Jennifer Lawrence–the set delight in better relations, post-relationship, than many couples who stay jointly. Breakups: conscious uncouplings
DOV CHARNEY AND AMERICAN APPAREL
KV The board at struggling retailer American Apparel ousted founder and CEO Dov Charney last summer amid charges of sexually harassing employees and misuse of company money. None of it came as a surprise, mind you. The Montreal-born Charney’s indiscretions are legendary and include masturbating in front of a reporter. Even so, it’s not entirely clear whether Charney’s exile will be permanent. He remains a strategic consultant to the company, known both for its ethical treatment of staff and its own quasi-pornographic advertisements, and there’s even discuss him remaining on as an employee, although not as CEO. Apparently sex–even the sleazy kind–sells.
LEBRON JAMES AND THE MIAMI HEAT
LeBron James won the hearts of basketball fans he lost four year ago when he revealed in July, via an introspective magazine column, that he would leave the Miami Heat and rejoin the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2014-15 season. Recall that James, who grew up in Ohio, informed the world of his 2010 decision to sign with the star-stacked Miami team, which went on to win two championships, by appearing on a tacky ESPN TV special. This is one breakup that will make a lot of people very happy.
CREATORS OF THE GOTHAM FONT
Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones are about as close to household names as you can get in the typography business. The pair’s firm came up with the wildly popular Gotham typeface–straightforward and classically American–that featured prominently on U.S. President Barack Obama’s 2008 “Trust” and “Change” advertising campaign posters (and all over the place else you appear). However the partnership quickly unravelled with a lawsuit where Frere-Jones accused Hoefler of cheating him out his talk about of the business enterprise. Thankfully for font-lovers, both include since settled the $20-million lawsuit out of courtroom. But don’t anticipate both sans-serif superstars to collaborate once again anytime soon.
MITCHELL CASADO AND UFLY
Casado’s name will most likely not sound familiar with AMERICANS. But various will keep in mind his goatee-adorned encounter, unbuttoned plaid t-shirts and easy understanding of commercial flying–true and in any other case. He was the trainer who put in time in a virtual cockpit alongside CNN‘s Martin Savidge during the fruitless search for missing Malaysia Air Flight 370 and its 239 passengers and crew. While all that free publicity should have been a boon for Casado, not to mention his employer, Mississauga. Ont.-based uFly, he was instead rewarded with a pink slip from his bosses, once it became apparent the missing airliner was unlikely to be found. Why? Because, relating to uFly, he “shamed us Canadians” by dressing just like a teenager.
RORY MCILROY AND CAROLINE WOZNIACKI
Among pro sport’s major power unions finished with a terse, 10-minute telephone call shortly after the marriage invitations went. Danish tennis celebrity Caroline Wozniacki says Rory McIlroy, golf’s current community Zero. 1, couldn’t even be bothered to break up with her in person, despite having seen her earlier in the day. (McIlroy, for his part, called the breakup mutual and amicable.) She bounced back quickly, however, and even took a subtle jab at McIlroy’s stature–five feet, nine inches–in a TV interview, when she talked about her desire to find “a taller guy so I can wear my heels.”
JILL ABRAMSON AND THE NEW YORK TIMES
Internal newsroom power struggles are rarely front-page news–unless they occur at the venerable New York Times. And so it was when Abramson, the first woman to be promoted to the high-profile position of the Times’ executive editor, was abruptly replaced after just three years on the job. The speculation on what, exactly, transpired immediately swung from Abramson’s dissatisfaction after learning she had been paid significantly less than her man predecessor, to publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr.’s concerns about her reputation to be abrasive. Sulzberger in the future attemptedto end the debate with a assertion that cited problems with Abramson’s carry out and leadership.
PADRAIG HARRINGTON AND SEAN FOLEY
Sean Foley may will have the dubious distinction to be simply because controversial as the athlete he was employed to help. Both finished their four-year marriage amid speculation that alterations the Canadian swing instructor designed to Woods’s swing may have been in charge of a string of injuries experienced by the past champion. Alternatively, Woods in addition has advised that swing instructors hardly understand what it’s like as an elite person, suggesting he may well not have generally followed guidance. What’s not in dispute is usually that the pair failed to amass a consistent winning record, which is usually all that counts.
ALICIA KEYS AND BLACKBERRY
It was one of the stranger business partnerships in recent memory: smartphone maker BlackBerry and singer-songwriter Alicia Keys. Officially, Key’s title was “global creative director.” Unofficially, it should have read, “Look! Someone cool who’s not using an iPhone.” Not surprisingly, it didn’t work. (The actual fact that she tweeted from an iPhone a couple of days after taking the work didn’t support, although Keys in the future claimed it had been a hack.) At least we have the memory of Keys and former BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins, a tall, bespectacled man who favours drab, grey suits, awkwardly musing about how much they had in common during BlackBerry 10’s official New York launch.
